Over the weekend, donations to assist Julian Assange’s quest for freedom poured in.
In current exchange rates, the DAO raised 12,569 ETH ($38.8 million) to promote WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s release.
AssangeDAO is a group of cypherpunks working for Julian Assange’s release. The DAO is attempting to raise ETH in exchange for the $JUSTICE governance token. Which will use to bid on a 1/1 NFT created by digital artist Pak in partnership with Julian Assange.
The proceeds from the sale of the NFT will go to Julian Assange’s defense fund. Consequently, use to pay for legal bills and promote awareness about Julian’s extradition case. The Assange family has collaborated with the DAO and supports its attempts to bring cypherpunks from around the world together.
About Julian Assange
Assange is presently pursuing extradition to the United States. Following a court order in December that reversed a British court ruling blocking extradition. He imprisons in a London prison in January of this year.
As per JuiceBox, the community financing site that is hosting the campaign, donations began to pour in on February 4th. Over the weekend, funding increased dramatically, more than doubling in the last 24 hours to reach the present amount.
Moreover, according to the AssangeDAO Twitter feed, it surpassed the November fundraising by ConstitutionDAO to buy an actual copy of the US Constitution.
The comparison makes in terms of ETH, which was substantially more expensive in November. The revenue received by ConstitutionDAO was about $49 million at the time.
It planned to spend the funds to buy a rare copy of the US constitution. However, billionaire Citadel CEO Ken Griffin outbid it at a recent Sotheby’s auction.
Hence, Constitution chose to return the full donation after being left with no constitution and $47 million in multi-signature wallets. Although, several DAO Discord users voiced their discontent with the high refund gas prices.
Where did AssangeDAO come from?
Thus, the origins of AssangeDAO may trace back to a Telegram group in mid-December, on the same day that the US government won its appeal of a U.K. extradition request. Assange’s extradition prohibits by a court order. According to the official website, Assange faces 175 years in prison if extradited to the United States for disclosing true information.
The FreeRossDAO was the inspiration for the idea. It has raised $12 million to liberate Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the dark web marketplace Silk Road.
In fact, Julian Assange is a detainee in London’s Belmarsh prison for the past three years. He locks away in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for nearly seven years, protected by asylum status.
